Today begins the solemnity of Rosh ha-Shanà, the Jewish New Year. We wish you Shanà tovà, a Happy New Year, with this precious Meil from the early 19th century, in ivory damask embroidered in gold and silver, which belonged to the Saluzzo synagogue and is now preserved in Turin.
On the occasion of Rosh ha-Shanà and until the feast of Kippur, the tenth day of the year, it is a widespread custom in synagogues to use light-coloured, ivory, white furnishings and vestments as a sign of purity, solemnity and sobriety.
