Event details
The Parkes Institute are proud to host the 1st International Workshop on Jewish Heritage 2016.
From 11-13 July 2016 the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations,University of Southampton will organise its first International Workshop on Jewish Heritage.

The aim of this conference is to bring academics, heritage practitioners, students and anybody interested in Jewish heritage together to exchange experiences, develop skills, expand their professional networks and establish working partnerships.

Our ambition is to assemble speakers and participants from the entire heritage sector, including archives, museums and built heritage conservation, because we believe that these areas and institutions share many challenges and could benefit from closer collaboration.

It is hoped that this will become an annual event.

For this first edition we chose the very broad topic of ‘Heritage and Its Communities’. The communities in question range from the source communities with whom heritage originates, to those who preserve, interpret and construct it and those who engage with it. Issues relating to communities include: questions of ownership, authority and responsibility for cultural heritage; the role of the state and social groups in its protection and promotion; the difficult task of building trust in fractured societies; the issue of representing loss and absence; and the challenge to meaningfully include source communities in curatorial decisions.

Moreover, how do Jewish heritage organisations deal with the multiplicity of their Jewish and non-Jewish audiences? (How) can Jewish heritage support community regeneration and identity building? To what extent has digital technology altered the relationship of communities with their heritage? These are just a few of the questions we might potentially address at the workshop.

Instead of a traditional conference, this event is going to be participatory and we therefore offer a mixture of workshops, discussions, and keynotes. Furthermore, all attendees have the opportunity to present their heritage or research projects, or their organisations either in a 10-minute short presentation or as part of a poster session.

The organisers also offer a limited number of travel bursaries.
